Event hosted by three Newark natives in an effort to revisit city’s forgotten past
NEWARK, N.J. – Newark’s lost and illustrious history will be uncovered on Saturday, September 19, 2009 when the AO Collective, in association with the Elite Group, hosts the 1st Annual Newark Citywide Scavenger Hunt. Open registration will begin that day at 9:30AM in the Coffee Cave located at 45 Halsey Street in Newark. The scavenger hunt will start at 11AM.
Spanning all five wards of the city, the Newark Citywide Scavenger Hunt will have participants pursue some of the city’s most famous landmarks as well as some lesser known treasures. The mansion of a beer baron, former houses of worship left behind by early immigrant cultures, and the city’s first site listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites are all part of this journey through Newark’s past. Participants will also scour the city in search of present day eateries, monuments and other prized items specific to the city and its culture.
“We believe residents of Newark and the surrounding areas need to be reminded of how great this city once was,” said Omar McKenzie, co-founder of The AO Collective. “The only way to truly usher in the renaissance is to remember where we came from. Many of these reminders are still around us and we walk by them daily. We hope this event will throw a big yellow sign in front of these landmarks, so people will pass by and remember the past, but see the future.”
“I’m thrilled that these young people have taken such an interest in the great history of this city,” said Linda Caldwell Epps, President and CEO, New Jersey Historical Society. “Newark possesses a rich past that so few people understand or know about it. My hope is that this event will provide a wealth of knowledge as well as a wonderful learning experience for those who participate.”
The Newark Citywide Scavenger Hunt will conclude at 4PM with a reception at the Coffee Cave where Caldwell Epps will address the participants.
The event is open to all who are willing to participate. There is a $20 registration fee for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Teams must be made up of a minimum of two (2) people in order to play. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three (3) teams.
