Art In The Atrium, Inc. Partners with LPCCD to present an Open Doors 2009 exhibit by Chris Cumberbatch
For ATA, the Open Doors Weekend event is a pre-show activity in advance of its 18th annual art exhibit and sale of fine art by African Americans in Morristown, the largest show of its kind in New Jersey. The collaboration with LPCCD is an opportunity to spotlight the work of Chris Cumberbatch as an emerging artist and to increase the visibility of Art in The Atrium to northern New Jersey audiences.
Lauren Craig, a spokesperson for ATA states, “We are excited at Art in the Atrium, Inc. about our participation in this year’s Open Doors event. ATA has enjoyed a long-time connection to the Newark art community through Newark native, the late Russell A. Murray, a prolific artist who was an ATA founder and curator and a teacher at West Side High School, as well as through the many artists that live and work in Newark who have exhibited in our annual exhibition for the past 18 years.”
Many of Cumberbatch’s works are painted on found objects, using Mystic paint, an environmentally sound product. The exhibit includes sculptural trees and large wall hangings. The artist explained, “My focus is the duality of eco-consciousness and spiritual consciousness. It’s an awareness of the richness of the earth and all that it contains for humanity…I want to hit a pulse of …emotion and spirit by fusing figures and nature, especially trees.”
Mr. Cumberbatch’s firm, Above The Surface, provides creative designs in decorative painting—wall illusions that resemble stone, marble and granite, and colorful murals—for several celebrity clients, among whom are Comedian, Actor, Radio Personality and Author, Steve Harvey; Singer/Rapper and Actor LL Cool J, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, legendary rapper, screen and stage actor and successful entrepreneur.
Anthony Smith, director of LPCCD Community Affairs and Operations said, “Lincoln Park is leading the way in eco-urban development. The environmentally-friendly art of Chris Cumberbatch is directly related to the LPCCD mission to develop an urban eco-arts district. When ATA expressed a desire to collaborate with us in presenting this artist’s body of work to this year’s Open Doors event, we agreed with enthusiasm, viewing it as an opportunity for broader exposure for the important work that is underway in the Lincoln Park Arts District.”
