NEWARK, NJ, June 23, 2011 – This summer, NJPAC is once again the place to be in downtown Newark on Wednesday and Thursday nights, hosting free music, dance and a hopping social scene. The Arts Center’s popular annual concert festival, Sounds of the City, brings the State’s hottest weekly music series, featuring Newark’s, New Jersey’s and the region’s best jazz, pop/rock, R&B and world music artists – with over 40 bands/artists and DJs, a vendor marketplace, and a multi-thousand-person party – Thursday evenings, June 23 through August 25, from 5pm – 10pm. And after becoming an instant hit last summer, NJPAC gets people’s feet – and the rest of their bodies – moving at GKT presents Sonic Superstars, a free Wednesday night dance party headlined by some of the world’s top DJs, running July 6 through July 27 from 5pm to 10pm. NEWARK, N.J., April 29, 2011 – NJPAC’s Alternate Routes series returns to Newark for its annual two-day GLBT festival, opening with Work! A Big Ol’ Gay Dance Party, an event that takes place on the stage and under the lights of the Arts Center’s Victoria Theater, featuring a performance by Vogue Evolution from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and dancing to house music by Newark’s own DJ Naeem Johnson. Night two heralds the return of the annual audience-pleaser, Out, Loud & Proud V, a night of spoken word focusing on sexuality with performances by international folk poet Alix Olson and Brave Soul Collective. NEWARK, N.J., April 12, 2011 – It is not too late to apply for an affordable apartment and studio in Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) is transforming a low-income neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey from blighted lots into an urban eco-arts village.

LPCCD was awarded a Low Income Housing Tax Credit Award to build affordable housing, comprised of one-, two- and three-bedroom rentals that are USGBC LEED Gold. The collection of four apartment buildings are scattered between four different sites. The first building at 18-28 West Kinney Street is already completed. The second building, located at 65 Lincoln Park, is on schedule to be finished this month. The third and fourth buildings, located at 39-43 Beecher Street and 15-17 Lincoln Park, are scheduled to be completed in June 2011. Rental prices start at $691 to $945 a month. The income requirement for a one-bedroom ranges from $23,520 to $35,200; for a two-bedroom income ranges from $28,260 to $43,950; and for a three-bedroom the range is $29,640 to $51,000. Please join the Rutgers Community for a candlelight vigil for Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi, who last week took his own life. At this event, we will discuss the devastating affects of LGBTQ bullying and the tragic loss of LGBTQ Youth to suicide. The event also seeks to provide Rutgers students with a safe space to discuss how Rutgers University and the nation can help stop the injustice LGBTQ individuals face in our society. We hope you will attend, not only to memorialize this devastating loss, but also to engage in a necessary and urgent discussion of what we must do as proud students of Rutgers University to protect our fellow classmates from such despair, and to ensure this tragedy is never again repeated.

The 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival “Afternoon of Jazz” Celebrates Newark’s Influence on the Genre

Newark, N.J., July 30, 2010 — July 30th is officially Newark Jazz Composers and Musicians Day in the City of Newark when the Jazz All-Star Newark Arkestra hosted by Amiri Baraka opens the 5th Anniversary Lincoln Park Music Festival on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 12pm – 2pm. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will invoke the “Tickler’s Town” spirit of Newark’s past and perform a historical overview of Newark Composers and a concomitant sampling of Great Ladies of the music. The Afternoon of Jazz at the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival will go back to early in the century with Willie The Lion’s Smith “Echoes of Spring”, and Besse Smith’s great “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down & Out”, to James P. Johnson’s “Charleston”. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will highlight the great Ethel Waters and the mood of the period with the song that made her famous “Taking a Chance on Love” and “Cabin in the Sky” from the marvelous film. Lincoln Park Community Farm Provides Fresh Produce to Newark

NEWARK, N.J., July 19, 2010 – Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) joined by Joe Atchison of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Jazz trumpeter James Gibbs III of the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival, FEMWORKS, and Newark’s Harvest Table Restaurant launched the Lincoln Park Community Farm (LPCF) last week. Paying only $20 a week, a long list of residents have become members in the farm’s community supported agriculture (CSA) program. Through the CSA, city residents receive a share of the harvest every week from July through late September 2010. “The Lincoln Park Community Farm is an impressive example of what urban farming can be in New Jersey,” stated Joe Atchison. Status Is Everything will represent Newark at the XVIII Annual International AIDS Conference in Vienna

NEWARK, N.J., July 6, 2010 – The African American Office of Gay Concerns (AAOGC) is proud to announce that the XVIII International AIDS Conference taking place in Vienna, Austria July 18-23, 2010, has selected the Status Is Everything HIV testing social marketing campaign to take part in the conference poster exhibition on July 19, 2010. The AAOGC poster is titled, “Creating a social marketing campaign targeting African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in Newark, New Jersey, in an effort to increase HIV rapid testing within a high risk population.” AAOGC is the only agency funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, selected to take part in the six-day conference.
