NEWARK, NJ, June 23, 2011 – This summer, NJPAC is once again the place to be in downtown Newark on Wednesday and Thursday nights, hosting free music, dance and a hopping social scene. The Arts Center’s popular annual concert festival, Sounds of the City, brings the State’s hottest weekly music series, featuring Newark’s, New Jersey’s and the region’s best jazz, pop/rock, R&B and world music artists – with over 40 bands/artists and DJs, a vendor marketplace, and a multi-thousand-person party – Thursday evenings, June 23 through August 25, from 5pm – 10pm. And after becoming an instant hit last summer, NJPAC gets people’s feet – and the rest of their bodies – moving at GKT presents Sonic Superstars, a free Wednesday night dance party headlined by some of the world’s top DJs, running July 6 through July 27 from 5pm to 10pm. NEWARK, N.J., April 29, 2011 – NJPAC’s Alternate Routes series returns to Newark for its annual two-day GLBT festival, opening with Work! A Big Ol’ Gay Dance Party, an event that takes place on the stage and under the lights of the Arts Center’s Victoria Theater, featuring a performance by Vogue Evolution from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and dancing to house music by Newark’s own DJ Naeem Johnson. Night two heralds the return of the annual audience-pleaser, Out, Loud & Proud V, a night of spoken word focusing on sexuality with performances by international folk poet Alix Olson and Brave Soul Collective. NEWARK, N.J., April 12, 2011 – It is not too late to apply for an affordable apartment and studio in Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) is transforming a low-income neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey from blighted lots into an urban eco-arts village.

LPCCD was awarded a Low Income Housing Tax Credit Award to build affordable housing, comprised of one-, two- and three-bedroom rentals that are USGBC LEED Gold. The collection of four apartment buildings are scattered between four different sites. The first building at 18-28 West Kinney Street is already completed. The second building, located at 65 Lincoln Park, is on schedule to be finished this month. The third and fourth buildings, located at 39-43 Beecher Street and 15-17 Lincoln Park, are scheduled to be completed in June 2011. Rental prices start at $691 to $945 a month. The income requirement for a one-bedroom ranges from $23,520 to $35,200; for a two-bedroom income ranges from $28,260 to $43,950; and for a three-bedroom the range is $29,640 to $51,000. Newark, N.J., July 30, 2010 — July 30th is officially Newark Jazz Composers and Musicians Day in the City of Newark when the Jazz All-Star Newark Arkestra hosted by Amiri Baraka opens the 5th Anniversary Lincoln Park Music Festival on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 12pm – 2pm. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will invoke the “Tickler’s Town” spirit of Newark’s past and perform a historical overview of Newark Composers and a concomitant sampling of Great Ladies of the music. The Afternoon of Jazz at the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival will go back to early in the century with Willie The Lion’s Smith “Echoes of Spring”, and Besse Smith’s great “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down & Out”, to James P. Johnson’s “Charleston”. Reflections, curated by Tony Graves & Akintola Hanif, is a retrospective look at the festival over the last four years and features works by Tamara Fleming, Tony Graves, Akintola Hanif, Jaecyne Howell, and Stafford Woods and a priceless collection of photos by Vincent Bryant taken from 1972-1978 at Newark’s legendary Zanzibar nightclub.
