NEWARK, NJ, June 23, 2011 – This summer, NJPAC is once again the place to be in downtown Newark on Wednesday and Thursday nights, hosting free music, dance and a hopping social scene. The Arts Center’s popular annual concert festival, Sounds of the City, brings the State’s hottest weekly music series, featuring Newark’s, New Jersey’s and the region’s best jazz, pop/rock, R&B and world music artists – with over 40 bands/artists and DJs, a vendor marketplace, and a multi-thousand-person party – Thursday evenings, June 23 through August 25, from 5pm – 10pm. And after becoming an instant hit last summer, NJPAC gets people’s feet – and the rest of their bodies – moving at GKT presents Sonic Superstars, a free Wednesday night dance party headlined by some of the world’s top DJs, running July 6 through July 27 from 5pm to 10pm. Each Sounds of the City concert will be streamed live at www.livestream.com/njpac.

Sounds of the City
Sounds of the City continues an annual summer tradition of bringing the top talent from the region to its outdoor stage in NJPAC’s Theater Square. Sounds of the City kicks-off on June 23 with a eighteen-artist Tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, co-presented with Purpose Records and sponsored by Hennessy. Each artist will pay homage to “the king” by covering some of his hits as well as some more obscure songs (rescheduled for Sep. 1 because of inclement weather). Other notable evenings in the series include an Afropop Night (July 7) that includes the international music icon Banning Eyre with Timbila (http://bit.ly/Timbila), a Bastille Day Celebration (July 14) featuring music from Francophone countries including Haiti, Cote D’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a Ladies Night (August 4) culminating with a Bachata dance party, a Jazz Night (August 18) featuring guitarist John Ehlis and Revive Da Live Big Band with Igmar Thomas, and the always-packed Salsa finale on August 25 with Swing Sabroso, special guest artists still to be named, and free dance lessons, sponsored by Hennessy.

A full list of artists performing at NJPAC’s Sounds of the City can be found below.

Sonic Superstars
GKT presents Sonic Superstars, last year’s addition to the Newark nightlife scene, was an instant hit and returns with four evenings of body-rocking music from some of the hottest DJ’s working today. The series opens July 6 with a Soulful House Music Night featuring DJ Beloved and Jihad Muhammad. The following Wednesdays in July are Ladies Nights (July 13) with DJ Kiss and Samantha Ronson (an artist in her own right, but also the stepdaughter of Foreigner’s Mick Jones and sister of DJ Mark Ronson) and sponsored by Hennessy Black, a Hip Hop Night (July 20) with the Awesome 2 and iconic hip hop DJ/producer Prince Paul, and a Global Soul Experience Night (July 27), which brings New York City’s twice monthly Libation party (http://bit.ly/korUdz) to Newark.

This summer’s Sounds of the City series is sponsored by Chase, Berkeley College, BD (Becton, Dickinson & Company), Bud Light, Hennessy, Verizon Wireless, Newark Downtown District,
New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Discover Jersey Arts.

The 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival “Afternoon of Jazz” Celebrates Newark’s Influence on the Genre

Newark, N.J., July 30, 2010 — July 30th is officially Newark Jazz Composers and Musicians Day in the City of Newark when the Jazz All-Star Newark Arkestra hosted by Amiri Baraka opens the 5th Anniversary Lincoln Park Music Festival on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 12pm – 2pm. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will invoke the “Tickler’s Town” spirit of Newark’s past and perform a historical overview of Newark Composers and a concomitant sampling of Great Ladies of the music. The Afternoon of Jazz at the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival will go back to early in the century with Willie The Lion’s Smith “Echoes of Spring”, and Besse Smith’s great “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down & Out”, to James P. Johnson’s “Charleston”. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will highlight the great Ethel Waters and the mood of the period with the song that made her famous “Taking a Chance on Love” and “Cabin in the Sky” from the marvelous film. For more information and a complete list of this year’s performances and attractions for seniors, families and children, visit http://www.lpccd.org/mf2010.

This will be a concert of swinging memory and funky education that revives Billie Holiday ‘s “Strange Fruit” and Ella Fitzgerald singing Ellington’s “Beginning to See The Light”. The Arkestra will pay tribute to Newark composers and cover James Moody’s “Moody’s Mood for Love”, Babs Gonzalez & Dizzy Gillespie’s “Oo Pappa Da” and bring back the “Divine One” Sarah Vaughan singing her BeBop version of “Lullaby of Birdland”. More music by Newark’s great hipsters include Wayne Shorter’s “One By One” and “Hipnosis” by Grachan Moncur III. The modern age and BeBop zone will converge with a sing out to Abbey Lincoln and Thelonious Monk of “Blue Monk”. The Newark All-Stars will also pay homage to two Newark icons, Woody Shaw with a big band version of ” Rosewood” and Larry Young Jr’s “Mother Ship”. There will also be a fully contemporary introduction of Adegoke Steve Colson’s “The Outcast”.

NEWARK, N.J., March 17, 2010 – The New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Alternate Routes series teams up genre-bending singer-songwriter, Toshi Reagon, and her band, BIGLovely, with her mother, the composer/scholar/teacher and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bernice Johnson Reagon, for one night only, Saturday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Victoria Theater. Tickets are $39 and are available by telephone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC (1-888-466-5722), at the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street in downtown Newark, or by visiting the NJPAC website at www.njpac.org. All tickets can be purchased by telephone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC (1-888-466-5722), at the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street in downtown Newark, or by visiting the NJPAC website at www.njpac.org. Dodge Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. For more information: www.njpac.org.

Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon have collaborated on previous projects together, including the musical score for the award winning films “Africans In America” on PBS and “BEAH: A Black Woman Speaks” for HBO. Their performances together are rare but always a welcomed opportunity. This concert will feature Toshi’s powerhouse band BIGLovely with Fred Cash on bass, Judith Casselberry on vocals and guitar, Robert Burke on drums, and Adam Widoff on electric guitar.

Known for energetic performances and a gift for writing engaging songs that provoke listeners to think and have fun at the same time, Toshi Reagon jumped into the spotlight when she dropped out of college after Lenny Kravitz tapped her to open for him on his first world tour. She has been touring and recording ever since, having shared the stage with the likes of Ani Difranco, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Elvis Costello and her own band, BIGLovely. www.toshireagon.com

For more than 40 years, Bernice Johnson Reagon has been a major cultural voice for freedom and justice; singing, teaching—speaking out against racism and organized inequities of all kinds. A singer of extraordinary emotional depth and vocal power, Reagon became active in the Civil Rights Movement while a college student at Albany State College in Albany, Georgia. She was a member of the original SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) Freedom Singers formed in 1962 by SNCC field secretary Cordell H. Reagon, and in 1966, a founding member of the Atlanta-based Harambee Singers. Early in 2004, Reagon retired after thirty years from the acclaimed African American women’s a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey In The Rock, which she founded in 1973. www.BJReagon.com

Hip Hop: Out, Loud & Proud IV takes place in NJPAC’s Chase Room on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16. Newark is Burning: Cakewalk to Catwalk takes place in NJPAC’s Victoria Theater on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $28. All tickets can be purchased by telephone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC (1-888-466-5722), at the NJPAC Box Office at One Center Street in downtown Newark, or by visiting the NJPAC website at www.njpac.org. Alternate Routes is made possible, in part, by American Express, the Ford Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. For more information: www.njpac.org.

HIP-HOP: OUT, LOUD & PROUD IV is a provocative evening featuring six performing artists of different races, ethnicities and sexual orientations. The lineup of artists revisiting their sexcapades includes Atlanta’s eclectic old school hip hop/R&B/rock singer DaLyrical; Los Angeles hip hop artist JenRO, who has appeared on VH1 and MTV’s LOGO; one of the first openly gay hip hop artists, Tori Fixx; the theatrically-trained lyrical virtuosos Mayhem Poets, who blend elements of hip hop, theatre, improv and stand-up comedy to tell gut-wrenching truths; and activist and poet, Simply Rob.

Host and guest curator of Hip Hop: Out, Loud & Proud IV, is Pandora Scooter, a self-identified “QUEERMAMASAPIEN,” whose words and rhymes have inspiring effects on audiences. Her work has included everything from stand-up comedy to hip hop to folk poetry to performance art. Scooter, like her work, defies traditional social labels. Her “pro-people” stance makes her an advocate on behalf of the misfits and ‘fits’ of the world. Among her numerous credits, this frequent NJPAC collaborator has performed two solo shows, along with sold-out performances of Hip Hop: Out, Loud & Proud. www.pandorascooter.com

NJPAC’s Alternate Routes brings to the stage a behind-the-scenes look at the culture of the “Ballroom scene” in Newark is Burning: Cakewalk to Catwalk. The “Harlem Drag Balls,” brought to mainstream audiences in the award-winning controversial 1991 documentary “Paris is Burning,” were full of stylish competition, fabulous haute couture fashion, gender-bending runway theatrics and one- of-a -kind dance performances. Through Newark is Burning, NJPAC creates a catwalk of its own in this production that tells the story of the creative Ball competitions and honors the long history and love that reside in a community that has transfixed and evolved a social scene for nearly a century. There will be a post-performance discussion immediately following the event and a late-night after party at Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, at 591 Broad Street (across the street from NJPAC). Newark is Burning: Cakewalk to Catwalk is curated by James Credle in collaboration with The Federation of Houses.

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, is the sixth largest performing arts center in the United States. As New Jersey’s Town Square, NJPAC brings diverse communities together, providing access to all and showcasing the State’s and the world’s best artists while acting as a leading catalyst in the revitalization of its home city. Through its extensive Arts Education programs, NJPAC is shaping the next generation of artists and arts enthusiasts. NJPAC has attracted over 6 million visitors (more than one million children) since opening its doors in 1997, and nurtures meaningful and lasting relationships with each of its constituents. Visit www.njpac.org for more information.

Programming has been made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

NJPAC is a wheelchair accessible facility and provides assistive services for patrons with disabilities. For more information, call 888-GO-NJPAC.

About Man-Up Documentary
Directed and executive produced by Tonia Grady of Gradygirl Productions, Inc., Man-Up is an uncompromising look at the young lives that hang in the balance of “fatherlessness”. To illustrate the magnitude of this social epidemic you will hear personal testimonies of triumph and devastation as Man-Up navigates through the experiences of growing up without a father and the effects thereof. The documentary gives a face to the voiceless children who suffer and ask themselves the unanswerable “why me?” Man-Up featured in the 2009 Atlanta Gay Pride film festival and the 4th Annual WIFTI (Women In Film and Television International) Short Film Showcase. For additional information on the documentary on Man-Up, please visit www.manupthedocumentary.com.
