NEWARK, N.J., July 19, 2010 – Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) joined by Joe Atchison of the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Jazz trumpeter James Gibbs III of the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival, FEMWORKS, and Newark’s Harvest Table Restaurant launched the Lincoln Park Community Farm (LPCF) last week. Paying only $20 a week, a long list of residents have become members in the farm’s community supported agriculture (CSA) program. Through the CSA, city residents receive a share of the harvest every week from July through late September 2010. “The Lincoln Park Community Farm is an impressive example of what urban farming can be in New Jersey,” stated Joe Atchison. Membership in the farm is available on a rolling basis. Visit www.lpccd.org for the application or call Rob W at 973-732-4003.

“The Lincoln Park Community Farm CSA program gives residents an affordable alternative to expensive organic produce at supermarkets and it addresses the dearth of fresh produce available in many of Newark’s neighborhoods,” says Baye Adofo-Wilson, Executive Director of LPCCD. Lincoln Park Community Farm uses raised-bed and hydroponic farming methods to yield an array of vegetables, fruit, and herbs including: Zucchini, basil, oregano, Thyme, Kale, Collards, red and green lettuce, romaine, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, mustard greens, okra, cucumbers, radishes, beans, beets, broccoli, chard, watermelon, cantaloupe, and carrots.

Volunteer opportunities are available for teenagers and adults. Volunteers will operate the distribution site, harvest, and provide general farm maintenance. To become a volunteer, call Rob W. at 973-732-4003.

NEWARK, N.J., July 6, 2010 – The African American Office of Gay Concerns (AAOGC) is proud to announce that the XVIII International AIDS Conference taking place in Vienna, Austria July 18-23, 2010, has selected the Status Is Everything HIV testing social marketing campaign to take part in the conference poster exhibition on July 19, 2010. The AAOGC poster is titled, “Creating a social marketing campaign targeting African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in Newark, New Jersey, in an effort to increase HIV rapid testing within a high risk population.” AAOGC is the only agency funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, selected to take part in the six-day conference.

“Our campaign is making a difference in Newark, which is the nationally and internationally recognized epicenter of HIV infections in New Jersey. This is a tremendous opportunity for the AAOGC to be among international leaders in HIV research and prevention and it’s an international kudos to our agency for advancing HIV prevention strategies in Newark, NJ among high risk populations,” states Gary Paul Wright, Executive Director of the African American Office of Gay Concerns. Gary Paul Wright will be present and available to answer questions about the poster at the conference on July 19, 2010 between 12:30 pm – 2:30pm. For those who can not attend the conference, the poster will be published at a later date electronically on the conference website and as a CD-ROM.

Status Is Everything is a pioneering HIV testing campaign targeting African American men between the ages of 18-24 who have sex with men in the Greater Newark area. Status Is Everything is the first HIV social marketing campaign in New Jersey to combine new media and traditional media strategies including: text messaging, Twitter, Facebook, PSAs and large-scale outdoor advertising. Candidates can receive 24-hour access to local Newark-based testing centers three ways: by texting NJ and their zip code (NJ07102) to 36363, calling 1-866-HIV-CHECK, or by visiting www.statusiseverything.org. A key component to the campaigns success is featuring local African American men who self-identify as men who have sex with men, in the campaign’s original photography and PSA’s. The New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services Division of HIV/AIDS Services funds the campaign, as part of its efforts to target high-risk African American men. Results will be evaluated through the HIV Prevention Community Planning Support and Development Initiative of Rutgers University.

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 3, 2009 – Capitalizing on a day-long calendar of local WORLD AIDS DAY events on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, the Open Door Drop-In Center (DIC) of Liberation in Truth Unity Fellowship Church successfully collaborated with three organizations to increase local visibility and recruit potential new clients and volunteers. In its primary collaboration with the Urban Issues Institute of Essex County College, the DIC used a multimedia approach to attract students to its table in a busy corridor of the college. Video projections of “Greater Than AIDS” and “Test 1 Million” public service announcements, featuring recognizable celebrities including President and Mrs. Obama, attracted dozens of junior college students to the table over the course of four hours. Many students signed up for information on DIC services, including HIV counseling and testing, Ryan White Intensive Case Management, and programming for women, including SISTA, an HIV prevention program.

“Liberation in Truth Unity Fellowship Church is an urban ministry, located in the heart of Newark, where the campuses and the rest of the community meet,” said Reverend Janyce L. Jackson, Pastor of Liberation In Truth, Executive Director of the Drop-In Center, and Vice Chair of the LGBTQ Commission in the City of Newark . “It’s exciting to continue expanding our role in service to our community and as a liaison within it.”

The Urban Issues Institute sponsored a multi-disciplinary College Hour program on local HIV/AIDS issues, for which DIC Program Manager Al Cunningham led a discussion of local statistics and their implications. Institute Director Dr. Margaret Stevens, and Professors Karen Thompson, Jennifer Wager, and Rebecca Williams, engaged their classes in curriculum-related aspects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In addition to the services offered by the DIC, students were reminded of volunteer and internship opportunities at the DIC that will complement their academic training and enhance their future employability.

The DIC also collaborated as a member of the NJ Stop AIDS Coalition, led by North Jersey Community Research Initiative (NJCRI) on the World AIDS Day Extravaganza at Newark’s Symphony Hall Terrace from 4 to 8pm. This annual “infotainment” event attracts a cross-section of Newark residents to a major downtown venue. Finally, the DIC participated in an evening Concert For Change, at Rutgers University Newark’s Robeson Campus Center, organized by RU PRIDE and Our Youth.
