NEWARK, NJ, June 23, 2011 – This summer, NJPAC is once again the place to be in downtown Newark on Wednesday and Thursday nights, hosting free music, dance and a hopping social scene. The Arts Center’s popular annual concert festival, Sounds of the City, brings the State’s hottest weekly music series, featuring Newark’s, New Jersey’s and the region’s best jazz, pop/rock, R&B and world music artists – with over 40 bands/artists and DJs, a vendor marketplace, and a multi-thousand-person party – Thursday evenings, June 23 through August 25, from 5pm – 10pm. And after becoming an instant hit last summer, NJPAC gets people’s feet – and the rest of their bodies – moving at GKT presents Sonic Superstars, a free Wednesday night dance party headlined by some of the world’s top DJs, running July 6 through July 27 from 5pm to 10pm. Each Sounds of the City concert will be streamed live at www.livestream.com/njpac.

Sounds of the City
Sounds of the City continues an annual summer tradition of bringing the top talent from the region to its outdoor stage in NJPAC’s Theater Square. Sounds of the City kicks-off on June 23 with a eighteen-artist Tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, co-presented with Purpose Records and sponsored by Hennessy. Each artist will pay homage to “the king” by covering some of his hits as well as some more obscure songs (rescheduled for Sep. 1 because of inclement weather). Other notable evenings in the series include an Afropop Night (July 7) that includes the international music icon Banning Eyre with Timbila (http://bit.ly/Timbila), a Bastille Day Celebration (July 14) featuring music from Francophone countries including Haiti, Cote D’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a Ladies Night (August 4) culminating with a Bachata dance party, a Jazz Night (August 18) featuring guitarist John Ehlis and Revive Da Live Big Band with Igmar Thomas, and the always-packed Salsa finale on August 25 with Swing Sabroso, special guest artists still to be named, and free dance lessons, sponsored by Hennessy.

A full list of artists performing at NJPAC’s Sounds of the City can be found below.

Sonic Superstars
GKT presents Sonic Superstars, last year’s addition to the Newark nightlife scene, was an instant hit and returns with four evenings of body-rocking music from some of the hottest DJ’s working today. The series opens July 6 with a Soulful House Music Night featuring DJ Beloved and Jihad Muhammad. The following Wednesdays in July are Ladies Nights (July 13) with DJ Kiss and Samantha Ronson (an artist in her own right, but also the stepdaughter of Foreigner’s Mick Jones and sister of DJ Mark Ronson) and sponsored by Hennessy Black, a Hip Hop Night (July 20) with the Awesome 2 and iconic hip hop DJ/producer Prince Paul, and a Global Soul Experience Night (July 27), which brings New York City’s twice monthly Libation party (http://bit.ly/korUdz) to Newark.

This summer’s Sounds of the City series is sponsored by Chase, Berkeley College, BD (Becton, Dickinson & Company), Bud Light, Hennessy, Verizon Wireless, Newark Downtown District,
New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Discover Jersey Arts.

The 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival “Afternoon of Jazz” Celebrates Newark’s Influence on the Genre

Newark, N.J., July 30, 2010 — July 30th is officially Newark Jazz Composers and Musicians Day in the City of Newark when the Jazz All-Star Newark Arkestra hosted by Amiri Baraka opens the 5th Anniversary Lincoln Park Music Festival on Friday, July 30, 2010 from 12pm – 2pm. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will invoke the “Tickler’s Town” spirit of Newark’s past and perform a historical overview of Newark Composers and a concomitant sampling of Great Ladies of the music. The Afternoon of Jazz at the 5th Annual Lincoln Park Music Festival will go back to early in the century with Willie The Lion’s Smith “Echoes of Spring”, and Besse Smith’s great “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down & Out”, to James P. Johnson’s “Charleston”. The All-Star Newark Arkestra will highlight the great Ethel Waters and the mood of the period with the song that made her famous “Taking a Chance on Love” and “Cabin in the Sky” from the marvelous film. For more information and a complete list of this year’s performances and attractions for seniors, families and children, visit http://www.lpccd.org/mf2010.

This will be a concert of swinging memory and funky education that revives Billie Holiday ‘s “Strange Fruit” and Ella Fitzgerald singing Ellington’s “Beginning to See The Light”. The Arkestra will pay tribute to Newark composers and cover James Moody’s “Moody’s Mood for Love”, Babs Gonzalez & Dizzy Gillespie’s “Oo Pappa Da” and bring back the “Divine One” Sarah Vaughan singing her BeBop version of “Lullaby of Birdland”. More music by Newark’s great hipsters include Wayne Shorter’s “One By One” and “Hipnosis” by Grachan Moncur III. The modern age and BeBop zone will converge with a sing out to Abbey Lincoln and Thelonious Monk of “Blue Monk”. The Newark All-Stars will also pay homage to two Newark icons, Woody Shaw with a big band version of ” Rosewood” and Larry Young Jr’s “Mother Ship”. There will also be a fully contemporary introduction of Adegoke Steve Colson’s “The Outcast”.

NEWARK, N.J., July 6, 2010 – The African American Office of Gay Concerns (AAOGC) is proud to announce that the XVIII International AIDS Conference taking place in Vienna, Austria July 18-23, 2010, has selected the Status Is Everything HIV testing social marketing campaign to take part in the conference poster exhibition on July 19, 2010. The AAOGC poster is titled, “Creating a social marketing campaign targeting African American men who have sex with men (MSM) in Newark, New Jersey, in an effort to increase HIV rapid testing within a high risk population.” AAOGC is the only agency funded by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, selected to take part in the six-day conference.

“Our campaign is making a difference in Newark, which is the nationally and internationally recognized epicenter of HIV infections in New Jersey. This is a tremendous opportunity for the AAOGC to be among international leaders in HIV research and prevention and it’s an international kudos to our agency for advancing HIV prevention strategies in Newark, NJ among high risk populations,” states Gary Paul Wright, Executive Director of the African American Office of Gay Concerns. Gary Paul Wright will be present and available to answer questions about the poster at the conference on July 19, 2010 between 12:30 pm – 2:30pm. For those who can not attend the conference, the poster will be published at a later date electronically on the conference website and as a CD-ROM.

Status Is Everything is a pioneering HIV testing campaign targeting African American men between the ages of 18-24 who have sex with men in the Greater Newark area. Status Is Everything is the first HIV social marketing campaign in New Jersey to combine new media and traditional media strategies including: text messaging, Twitter, Facebook, PSAs and large-scale outdoor advertising. Candidates can receive 24-hour access to local Newark-based testing centers three ways: by texting NJ and their zip code (NJ07102) to 36363, calling 1-866-HIV-CHECK, or by visiting www.statusiseverything.org. A key component to the campaigns success is featuring local African American men who self-identify as men who have sex with men, in the campaign’s original photography and PSA’s. The New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services Division of HIV/AIDS Services funds the campaign, as part of its efforts to target high-risk African American men. Results will be evaluated through the HIV Prevention Community Planning Support and Development Initiative of Rutgers University.

About the 2010 Census
The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution to be
conducted every 10 years. Census data are used to apportion congressional seats to states; to distribute more than
$400 billion in federal funds to local, state, and tribal governments each year; and to make decisions about what
community services to provide. The 2010 Census form will be one of the shortest in U.S. history and consists of just
10 questions, taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict confidentiality laws protect the respondents and the
information they provide.

Black Police Officers’ Organization to Engage in Outreach to LGBT Community

NEWARK, N.J., November 2, 2009 – The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) announced the resolution of a dispute involving two women who were turned away from a fundraising dance hosted by the organization. The women claimed they and their friends were excluded based on their sexual orientation or gender expression.

“We are grateful that the matter is settled, but even more, we are grateful that this resolution promises to help other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals,” stated Cheryl Rogers who, along with her partner Towana Christopher, claim that they and friends were not welcomed at a NOBLE sponsored fundraising dance held in April in Edison, NJ. “While no one should have to face discrimination, we are glad that our experience can lead to stronger ties and greater understanding between police officers and the LGBT community.”

While NOBLE did not concede that any act of discrimination occurred, the two groups resolved the dispute amicably, with each gaining a better understanding of the other’s views. NOBLE will extend outreach to the lesbian, gay, transgendered and bisexual (LGBT) community, and the complainants have agreed to not to pursue any legal action. Both parties expressed an interest to move forward with a strong commitment to equal rights.

“NOBLE understands the destructive power of discrimination, and we handle every complaint with the seriousness it deserves,” said Jessie Lee, Jr., NOBLE’s National Executive Director. “We welcome this resolution as a way to help better educate all New Jerseyans about their right to be free from discrimination.”

NOBLE, recognizing the pivotal role of law enforcement in building ties with the LGBT
community, has agreed to expand its outreach by appearing at events to educate the LGBT community about hate crimes laws and bias crimes. The organization will also post a statement on its website each June – to coincide with Pride Month – expressing its support for equal treatment from law enforcement regardless of anyone’s sexual orientation or gender expression.

“We are proud that this resolution creates an opportunity for police officers to build a bridge with the LGBT community,” stated ACLU-NJ Legal Director Ed Barocas, who represented the two women. “This resolution helps not only the women involved, but the rights of all members of the LGBT community.”

NOBLE, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, was founded in 1976 with a mission to ensure equity in the administration of justice in the provision of public service to all communities, and to serve as the conscience of law enforcement by being committed to justice by action.

The ACLU-NJ, based in Newark, implements legal, legislative and public education programs in conjunction with large numbers of volunteers to advance the ACLU’s goals of liberty and justice for all. For information about ACLU-NJ please visit http://www.aclu-nj.org .
