Brick City Film Receives Mixed but Hopeful Reactions from the Community
Sundance Brick City Premiere – September 15, 2009

Interviewed by fayemi shakur — Video and editing by Jeremy Robins

The red carpet debut of the Sundance film Brick City by executive producer Forest Whitaker and directors Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin had the city buzzing for weeks. Tickets were grabbed in record time in less than a day by those who wanted to get the first look. Despite the excitement, lingering issues concerning crime, joblessness and harsh realities of urban life and revitalization could not be sidestepped. Even on such a celebratory day, the energy of the moment was somewhat bittersweet. As Mayor Cory Booker seeks another term, many wondered if this film will be his attempt to prove that progress is being made. Can he do it? He says yes, but admits the hard work that remains cannot be done by himself.

The City of Newark is filled with thousands of success stories, hope and courage that many will never see. Brick City seeks to highlight a few of them. Part one of the series features the undisputed but humble stars of the show, Jayda and Creep – two young gang members seeking redemption and a better life. The rest of the highly anticipated five-part documentary film series promises to intrigue the hearts and minds of audiences across the nation. The production may be phenomenal but everyone wants to know what happens next? Can Newark shock the world?

The growing sense among Newarkers is more effort is needed like nothing seen before and the focus must be less about star power and more about solutions and resources. In spite of some cautious optimism, a profound sense of self-determination and collective responsibility continues to permeate the City amid the problems that still exist. The future looks bright when we come together.
